Is alternative history possible?

I have been thinking the answer of this question since I started writing on this blog. If you have been reading me, you may be thinking that my answer is yes and you are correct, I say that it´s possible. Many things could have changed during all our history and our daily lifes wouldn´t be as we know nowadays. For instance, if Hitler had won the WW2, socially we would be different. We would discriminate many people and they would have a lot of poverty if we put the case that they weren´t killed. So my conclusion is that alternative history is possible and it would change our lifes.

Mixing real and alternative history

The cold war started when the WW2 finished. There were 2 groups. the soviets and the USA. They   didn´t want a direct confrontation because this would led to a big war with many arms like tanks. The soviets had a democracy while the other band had a monarchy. USA was against Germany because of his military power.
My partner read this and she discovered the false elements. Although this, there are things that seem real as the 2 groups in which the world was divided or that they didn´t was a war with tanks, in stead they didn´t want a war with nuclear weapons.

False history

There are many histories that we consider them real but they aren´t. For example, we say that Einstein wasn´t good at maths and he failed. This is false because they evaluated from 1 to 5 and a 1 was the best mark that a student could achieve. I have been looking on internet and I have discovered many things like this. The strangler of Boston was a famous murderer that killed 13 people and we call him like this because we thought that he strangler everybody but he only strangled his first victim, the rest were stabbled.
This history doesn´t change much our daily lifes but some of them yes. For instance, there is a lot of people that think that the VIH isn´t real and they deny it as an illness.

Conversation

I could speak with Albert Einstein while I was in the past. He is very famous because of his intelligence and because of his theories, specially the relativity one. My conversation was like this.
Hi, I am Elena, I am glad to meet you.
Hi I am Einstein, Albert Einstein.
Is it true that you were a bad student?
No, it´s true that I failed an exam on an university but I failed because it was in french and I didn´t know that language.
I come from the future and in the future you will invent the atomic bomb.
 What´s that?
It´s the biggest bomb and it destroys everything.
And why do I did that?
You didn´t know that this was going to be invented.
 How can I change this?
You don´t have to help to the big governments because they want to end the war.
And for finishing it they sent a bomb?
It didn´t finish it but it helped. They sent 2 bombs. One in Hiroshima and another in Nagasaki, two cities in Japan.
 Ok, I won´t help them.
 Fine.
 And does my theorie accepted?
It cost us a lot to confirm it but on the year 2015 it was accepted.
Am I a big scientific in the future?
Yes, you are one of the biggest scientific. I have to go, bye
 Bye.

Spanish Civil War

 Real History
On the real history Pamplona supported the nationalists because of the rising of the nationalists at the beginning of the war. The most important battle was the one that took place on the river Ebro. It was the bloodiest battle during the war and a lot of people participated. It was decisive for the republicans that lost the war.

 Alternative History
I have been thinking on what would have happened if the republicans had won the battle on the river Ebro. If it had happened, the war could have had another course. If republicans had won, we wouldn´t have had a dictatorship and, probably, we would have participated in the WW2 or not, but nowadays we wouldn´t have a monarchy.

Crazy history

Have you ever thought what would have happened if during the WWII they had discovered fruits that when you eat them they give you magic powers?  Yes, you would be thinking that it would be very funny but no. Those fruits were under the sea and they couldn´t be planted anywhere except at 2000m under the sea. This made that common people couldn´t have these magic fruits and only rich and power people could allow this. It happened on the WWII so both groups started to fight for those powers. Finally, as you know, a big power carries a big responsability and they didn´t have it so they destroyed the Earth with the powers.

WWII

The second world war was a period with many battles and death people. Nazis killed a lot of Jews and experimented with people. This was a terrible way of discovering new medicines but thanks to this we made many advances.
ALTERNATIVE VERSION.
If Hitler hadn´t started the WWII many advances wouldn´t have existed like new medicines or those laws against the animal mistreatment. However, it was a terrible war and this kind of racism should have never existed so in my opinion, wars shouldn´t exist.

USSR

The USSR was a communist union. They didn´t give importance to the money, everybody gained the same and it didn´t matter the job that you had. They wanted an equal society but this didn´t succed because it made social problems.

 ALTERNATIVE VERSION.
If the USSR haven´t existed or yes but with another ideas life would be very different to what we know nowadays. For example they could have participated on a different way or invented many things or an alien invasion could have occurred and changed our lives forever.

WWI

The WW1 started because of the assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir of the Austro-Hungarian empire. It was a big war in which a lot of people died because nearly all the countries participated on this sad war.
Have you ever thought what would have happened if the archduke haven´t been killed on Bosnia. Probably the war wouldn´t have started... or yes. Ferdinand was the gunstrike, but before that, there was a period of tendion between the countries and tension have caused many wars during history. If we think that the war wouldn´t have started, many things will change in our daily life.
The WWI was a period of many changes. There were a lot of inventions like the telephone because during a war, a lot of things are invented. Also a lot of people died because of illnesses during the trenches or fighting.
If the war hadn´t occured, people that died could have made big inventions. We could have the cure against cancer or the panacea. Although this, many things wouldn´t be the same. For example, I wouldn´t be writing this because computers wouldn´t exist as they were invented during the WW2 and the first wouldn´t have existed.
Althought the WWI was a big catastrophe it changed our lives forever and we could have had another war worse that the first. I think wars shouldn´t happen, but manuy good thing happen during this so it´s very difficult to imagine our lifes without this.

Alternative History

Have you ever thought how the most insignificant thing can change world´s history? If you go to the past , it´s very important not to change anything because the most tiny change can have many effects, for example, if you do something and your parents haven´t meet you won´t born and you will never exist. Now that you have realised of the importance of not changing history, lets think a little bit more. What would have happened if a historical character like Hitler had won the war. How would our daily lives be?

Daily life in Japan

Japan was a closed society that didn´t want other countries to control them like China. Until the middle 19 century they were closed to the commerce. This caused that their daily life was very different from the life on other place. One of the most important aspects on those times was the presence of the religion. Until the 19 century, they were buddhists but the emperor wanted to impose the Shintoism to the empire, this caused a period of social instability because society was divided in 2 groups. If we look to the people´s work there are also many differences. I could prove that it was a sexist society because women couldn´t do many things and they depended on a man, although this, they were also women that could fight. They were called kunoichi and helped spying people because anybody suspected of a woman and they used a big variety of poisons for killing others. These women were very respected because of their big capacity.
Their daily food consisted on rice and fish. They didn´t eat meat because of their religion. Their clothes changed depending on the work. For example, a person that worked on agriculture had other clothes than a person dedicated to the war, like a samurai that was different to a political charge.

Italian Unification

I participated in the italian unification helping to unify the north. This was the first battle. It was very different from battles nowadays. For example, there was a lot of people and, at the beginning, it was a very organized battle. There were many troops that attacked from different sides. The general and the people who managed the soldiers fought on a horse and they had swords. It was also another group of people that fought with fired weapons. Those weapons had also a sharped steel knife used for fighting if the people approximated.

Les miserables: way of living

I learned some things about the way of living on that period. The basic on nutrition was the bread that later was changed for the potato. Half of the wage of a common worker was spent on food. On the case of livings we have a big variety. There were rich and poor neighbourhoods. The biggest problems of the houses was that they were very old and many families lived there causing an unhealthy way of living. If we look to the diseases we find that the tisis, an illness caused by poverty, killed to the 20% of the population. All this and the fact that they started working as a child show us that although there were many changes on the products people´s life didn´t improve until later.

Les miserables: work

On the film I could see a big variety of work. At the beginning there were a lot of girls working on a textile factory while a man was looking that they make her job. Althought this was a very repetitive work it was the best for that women because if they were fired, they had to work as whores or sell parts from their bodies like their hair or teeth. This were very unfaired works and they had to be with rich people that could do with them whatever they wanted.
On the other side there were big business owners that had a lot of privileges, for example, the law protect them. They didn´t work the same hours that their workers and they earned a lot of money.

Les miserables: people

Before I went to the IR I saw the film called Les Miserables. On this film I was surprised because of the people and their behaviour. For example, at the beginning there´s a young woman that is fired because she had a little girl and she gave her money. I think that this isn´t a reason to fire a person and the ones who said her secret were her colleagues. I discovered that this was a sexist society because if a woman had a baby, the man didn´t responsabilyze and only the girl had to care it. This is also caused because they thought that women were the ones that had to care the children while the man was working and this is sexist.

Ludwig van Beethoven

When you think about romanticism music you always think in Beethoven. He was the most important musician on that times. He is characterized by the changes of melodies that gave to the composition an abrupt rhythm to which people wasn´t used to. It was a big change if we compare it to the previous music that was mathematically organized. He also invented a lot of new structures. This is related to the IR because it was a period of big changes that are also shown on the music.

Lord Byron´s meeting

I met Byron on the year 1812, a date in which he had just published his first songs that narrate his trip to Europe. This was the year in which he became famous. The meeting was as I wanted. I could ask him aspects of the life of a writer. I wanted to know this because I thought that the life of a writer is very different depending on the period when you are. He was the son of a sailor and when his father died, his mother started to be very distant althought they weren´t very close. He also had a malformation on his foot that didin´t allow him to walk very good. Althought this he could walk normally.

Lord Byron

I´ve always loved literature and of course, I wanted to know more about a writer from Romanticism. The author I found was Lord Byron, one of the most important ones during this period. His work is related to the period because he inspired a lot of Victorian authors that wanted to imitate his heroes that had a great talent and passion. One of the poems I read is "She walks in beauty", this is poem that talks about the girl that he love but the poem that better describes this period because at the beginning he talks about his dream in which he thinks that the Sun switches off and their is no light anymore. Later we know that he is talking about the big fire that suffered London. The poem is called "Darkness".

App

I have looked for some apps to becoming aware of the environment. Obviously, on that times this didn´t existed but fortunately nowadays yes. One of my favorite ones is one that shows you the quantity of water that you are wasting and it tells you how to manage it better. It has helped me a lot because after I saw the effects of the pollution I don´t want to contaminate anymore.

The lethal effects of London fogs

Before I went, I looked some information of the contamination on that times. Here I found that on 1952, the pollution killed 12000 people in London. There was a lot of contamination because of the factories. It was the first time on the history that the Earth was polluted. People didn´t know the effects and the were very big. For example, they had a constant fog that didm´t allow them to see very well on the streets or they could´t breath very well.

Comparing to now...

I have had the lucky of living in two different periods, so I know 2 different ways of living. There are many things that have changed. For example, nowadays we have become aware of the pollution so we don´t contaminate as much as before, times were anybody was awared. Many things have improved along history. Unfortunately, we still having children working on factories on poor countries. The difference is that we are trying to change this and we see that it´s not correct to do that to those children and on the Industrial Revolution times didn´t think like that. Of course everything changes with time, what we have to do now is to still improving society.

Environment

When I went to the Industrial Revolution, one of the most amazing events that surprised me was the environment. As I said before, if you looked on a mountain, the only thing that you could see was a lot of chimneys and fogs that didn´t allow you to see any building or street. This was the first time that people started to contaminate and it was a very big change that has continued until nowadays. The streets were most of the workers lived were narrow and dark because they were near the factories. On the other side, the owner´s streets were big with buildings that had more than one floor.
Pollution was one of the biggest problems on that times and this problem was also reflected on the life of the common people.

My dialogue

On my trip, I met a worker and a chip worker, this is the dialogue we had:

Me Hi I have just arrived in London and I would like to know a little bit more about the way people live here. Can you tell me something about your lifestyle?
Worker Hi, nice to meet you. We are workers on this factory.
Me How many hours do you work?
Child We enter here at 7:00 in the morning and we go out at 20:00, but we have a rest a midday for eating. We work everyday with few exceptions like Christmas were we can go before 20:00
Me And what type of work do you do?
Worker: I work on the construction of cars, so I have a repetitive work on the conveyor belt. Sometimes my arms hurts because of doing always the same movement.
Child: I also work on the conveyor belt, but, when something blocks the belt I am the one that has to enter because I am little and few people fit there so I also have to do that.
Me: Do you have free time?
Child: I can play with other children when I finish the work but sometimes I am very tired and I only want to arrive to home so I don´t play many days. Of course, on Sunday I can be with them and we pass it very well playing.
Worker: When I return to my home, I like to be with my wife and spend time with my sons. They are the reason for this work, if not, I would have changed the job and looked for anything else, but I have some obligations and I want hem to be happy.
Me: When you finish working, how is your life at home?
Child: When I arrive at home I give my parents the money that I have earn that day and later my family and me have a dinner all together and we say how it has been our day, Then I am too tired so I go to sleep until the next day.
Worker: I have a dinner like him and then I play with my sons until we go to sleep.

The saddest episode

When you are on a travel, you always want to enjoy it but, unfortunately, I saw a sad episode during my trip to the Industrial Revolution. I met a boy, he was a little child of approximately 8 years old, but his age wash´t an impediment for him to work on a factory. He told me that he was the son of two workers, so as you may be thinking, his family was poor. He had a younger sister of 6 years old and he was working for her because he didn´t want her to work in a factory like he was obligated to do. He didn´t have a special treatment because he was young, he had to work the same as the older employers, the same hours, the same labour conditions, everything was the same.
This has been the saddest episode I saw, and this helped me to think that nowadays, children on poor countries are passing thorugh the same that this child working on factories owned by big companies. We have to change this and this has opened my way of thinking.
